INFRARED ASPHALT PATCHING
Infrared asphalt patching is a method of blending new asphalt with existing – Infrared Heated – Pavement material to create a joint-free integral patch.
This method involves heating the damaged area with infrared rays, softening the existing asphalt. The truck mounted machine is capable of heating the existing pavement material to a depth of approximately two (2) inches without oxidation or burning. There is no flame in direct contact with the existing pavement surface.
Once the asphalt is softened, it becomes pliable, allowing technicians to rework and smooth out the surface. Fresh asphalt is then added to the softened area, creating a seamless blend between the old and new materials. This process not only restores the surface but also enhances its durability and lifespan.
Infrared asphalt patching is particularly useful for addressing issues such as potholes, cracks, and uneven surfaces, providing a reliable solution for maintaining roads, parking lots, and other paved areas. This technique is known for its speed and precision, making it a preferred choice for many commercial and industrial applications.
ADVANTAGES OF INFRARED ASPHALT PATCHING
- Time – Depending on air temperature, the entire process will take from 10 to 20 minutes. Infrared patching heats the existing asphalt, eliminating the need for lengthy removal processes. The traditional method, involving sawing-cutting, excavating, and repaving-can result in longer downtime of a parking lot.
- Convenience – The convenience of infrared asphalt patching lies in its flexibility and minimal disruption to traffic or business operations. The ability to complete the repairs during off-hours even when asphalt plants are not operating makes this a popular choice.
- Quality – Infrared asphalt patching provides a high-quality repair by creating a seamless bond between old and new asphalt. No new cold joints are created, meaning there are no open seams between the old pavement and the infrared patch.
- Cost – Cost-effectiveness is another significant benefit of infrared asphalt patching. The process requires fewer materials andless labor compared to traditional methods, leading to lower overall costs.
COMMON USES OF INFRARED ASPHALT PATCHING
Infrared asphalt patching is versatile and can be used in various situations where asphalt surfaces require repair. It’s commonly applied to fix potholes, a frequent issue in areas with heavy traffic or severe weather conditions. The process is also effective for repairing cracks and surface depressions, which can compromise the integrity of a pavement over time.
- Repair holes and surface deteriorated areas
- Eliminate depressions-water holes-tripping hazards
- Achieve smooth black top at transition joints
- Repair newer pavement without sawing-cutting
- Restore Service cuts
- Adjust pavement height to manholes
- Lower high areas
- Repair deteriorated paving seams
